For my family, our home is not merely a place where we live…

It’s our retreat, or safe place and a reflection of who we are!

As for me, my home is my canvas!

I am constantly redecorating and making changes, and in this case, I can truly say that I have learnt it all from my mistakes. I have read a million books on home décor (all very useful and informative), but what experience taught me is priceless.

So, her I am sharing a few tips that will be very useful for you.

Get some indoor plants

Greenery inside the house is highly underestimated. They not only add colour to your interiors, but they bright up the space instantly and add warmth.

Your home should be who you are

Your home should speak your language. If it doesn’t, then it’s a well done up house and not your home.

Many people question their taste or their capability while doing up their homes. It’s perfectly ok to hire an interior designer, but add your own touch too. Sit with the designer and talk about your taste- The kind of upholstery you like; the colours you like; your taste is more vintage or modern; your taste in art and furniture; you want your home to be more formal or relaxed; walls need to be white or colourful; go for shopping for the interiors with the designer’s team; be involved. Your home will be ‘you’, designer or no designer!

Don’t forget the rugs

I love rugs and carpets.  Little tough to maintain, if you have kids or pets in the house, but totally worth it. They add warmth, colour, richness and they make a room look cosy. I love to display artefacts on my rugs.

Carpets and rugs are an amazing option when you want your floors to look different. Don’t change the flooring, change or add some carpets and rugs! Cheaper too 😉

You can use them to segregate certain areas too.

Play with lighting

The market is full of beautiful and adventurous lightings. Be it floor lighting or celling or wall opt table lamps, there is so much variety. If you don’t want to venture out in the market, try Pepperfry, Amazon and Fabindia. You will have enough choices.

Lighting are easy to change too and you can experiment as often. What i have realised is, lighting fixtures or lamps can change the whole look of a place.

Don’t follow trends blindly

Following trends blindly can cost you a bomb.

Think ten times before you change flooring or windows or knock down a few walls (basically architectural changes). Mostly the itch to get a new look can be handled with using temporary fixtures like lightning and furniture and décor items.

Don’t hang Curtains wrong

Curtains should end an inch above the floor. Too low and they are sweeping the floor and someone will trip on it. Too high and it’s just not right.

I love flowing curtains in bedrooms. They add.

I love heavy curtains for the living room as i feel they add richness.

Blinds are good too. Use lesser fabric and ae easy to maintain and they make a room look bigger.

Never ignore the Outdoor space

These days, bungalows or pent houses are a luxury restricted to few. With most of us living in apartments, we are fortunate if there is balcony available. Do t up in a way that’s its usable and yet easy to maintain. There are so many designs on Pinterest. You can get your ideas from there. Once again, chose the ones that are easy to maintain. Putting rugs in balconies in India, where there is so much dust, is not a good idea.

A comfortable kitchen

Kitchen is usually the most ignored area of a house. A kitchen is the heart of every home, no matter how little cooking you do in there. Make it warm; make it comfortable.

Don’t overlook old furniture

In this fast-moving world, where everything is just a click away, replacing old with the new is an easier option. If you don’t like an old sofa, get it reupholstered and revamped. Add a few cushions and you are good. Don’t like a shelf, get it painted in a different colour. Move your furniture and décor items around. It works!

Display art differently on the walls

You don’t want all walls looking the sae. Right?

Use a different display pattern on each wall. Mix it up with a few paintings or mirrors or paintings. There is no rule that art has to be hung high. Hang it lower or just lean it again the wall (one or two, not more). It looks beautiful. Make your own rule. Experiment!

A family picture wall is a must

Picture bring memories. A wall with family picture of holidays, pictures of parents and grandparents, family get togethers is simply beautiful in my mind.

I have one and every time I pass by that wall, I get a warm feeling.

A family picture wall is ‘home’.

A little nook for you

Everyone needs a little corner in their home… Be it a parent, a child or a pet.

No matter how small that corner is, it’s something you call just your own. It can be as simple as chair in a room with a throw or a floor cushion on a rug, but give everyone a little ‘nook’.

As for those doing up their homes, remember, you will make mistakes, you will go wrong. We all do. but there is always a next time! It’s all part of the learning process.

Hope this helps!

Lots of love,

Divya.
